The Top Clues To Look Out For That Your Maine Home Is Underinsulated

Back to Blog

The insulation hidden in the walls, attic, and crawl space of your Maine home is meant to keep you and your family comfortable throughout each season by preventing unwanted temperatures from infiltrating your home, while keeping the temperatures you do want inside your living space.

But insulation is one of the quieter “heroes” of your overall home performance, and it can be difficult to know when your insulation is compromised. Here are the top clues to look for that indicate your insulation may be lacking — as well as what you can do about it after you’ve recognized the issue — from Evergreen Home Performance, the home efficiency experts here in Maine.

Inconsistent Room-to-Room Temperatures

When the walls of your home are properly insulated, they will keep the conditioned air from your heating and cooling system in the rooms that air is delivered to. When wall insulation is lacking, a room’s conditioned air will seep out to the outdoors or into other areas of your home. This leads to rooms that are colder in the winter (and warmer in the summer) than the rest of the home.

Is that room above the garage notoriously hard to keep comfortable? Is there one room you find yourself dragging a space heater into during a frosty winter day? It may be time to check the insulation in your wall cavities.

Indoor Drafts

If you are experiencing differences in your room to room temperatures, you are likely also feeling drafts inside your home. While the term “heat rises” is commonly known, there is much more to that phrase. Heat will move to wherever there is less heat. So if you have a living room that is nice and toasty, but a bedroom that is poorly insulated and cold, the heat from the living room will make every attempt to move to the cold bedroom. The indoor draft you are feeling is the air that carries that heat between the two!

This can happen between the rooms of your home, between the floors that separate each level of your home, and between the outside air and your living space.

Ice Dams & Inconsistent Snow Melt On Your Roof

Did you know that icicles on the edge of your roof are a common indicator that you may be at risk of ice dams? But that isn’t all. Ice dams begin underneath your roof, where poor insulation causes the heat from your home to rise up to your roof shingles. This heat melts snow accumulation on your roof; the meltwater drains to colder areas, where it re-freezes and develops into an ice dam. The now-formed “dam” prevents future melted snow from properly draining into your gutters or drainage system, and the moisture eventually finds its way under the shingles, into the attic and other areas of your home. When moisture is allowed to infiltrate this way, it can cause further damage to your remaining insulation and the materials that make up the construction of your home. As well know, water is no friend to wooden rafters, fascia, studs and wall plates, and when the damage is caused by ice dams it can remain hidden for a long time.

Moisture, Mold, and Pest Issues

One sure-fire way to permanently damage insulation (and specifically damage commonly used fiberglass insulation), is getting it wet. If you have had any kind of moisture issues in your home, like ice dams* on your roof and in the attic, or ground moisture leaks in your basement or crawlspace, your insulation is likely damaged and is no longer providing the insulating properties you need to keep your home comfortable. Plus, when moisture lingers in your insulation materials, it is prone to mold growth — which can spread into your breathing air, potentially causing health issues for the inhabitants of your home.

Pests are also known to use the warmth of insulation as a cozy home, or in some cases a food source. They especially love fiberglass insulation, but thankfully detest our preferred insulation product, cellulose! Pests that like fiberglass insulation include:

  • House mice

  • Squirrels

  • Rats

  • Cockroaches

*Speaking of ice dams, attic insulation is the lesser-known–but most effective– solution for ice dams!

Cold Floors

Have you gotten used to getting up on those frigid winter mornings, and putting on your L.L. Bean slippers because the floors of your home are icy to the touch? This symptom of under-insulation can be caused by a lack of insulation underneath your floors, but is more commonly due to a lack of insulation throughout the basement or crawlspace.

At Evergreen, we see this issue time and time again — addressing the insulation and air sealing is the best way to insulate a basement, and can provide results almost immediately, as we saw in this 19th Century Deering Center Home!

Our basement was the eyesore of the house. I wanted to make improvements, but first needed to make structural, insulating and moisture mitigation improvements. Evergreen was professional and competent in taking on a complex project of not only encapsulation and insulation of basement and crawlspace, but completed needed improvements to the structural integrity of the wood floor platform above a crawlspace and brought in a concrete contractor to pour where there was once a rotting, tiered wood platform - replacing that area with a more functional and tight tiered concrete area.

We needed basement encapsulation to stop moisture coming up into the house from our regularly flooding basement. We had mold growing on windowsills and furniture. All the staff were friendly, respectful of our home, and easy to work with. Humidity has gone from 70% down to 40% and mold has not grown back after two months. Very grateful.

Evergreen did a fantastic job replacing 28 windows in our house. They were friendly, courteous, and very detail oriented. Brian did a great job planning, estimating and executing the project. Our energy use has dropped significantly since the work was done.

We had Evergreen come out to our tiny old (100+ year old) house to see what they would recommend for decreasing our carbon footprint, saving money, and increasing our comfort in the cold season. Richard and Bryan were great to work with, patiently answering our many questions and walking us through multiple options. We could only afford to tackle a few areas this year; we ended up replacing some windows and having them weatherize the entire house.

Highly recommended. Our heating usage is now less than half what it was before we had our roof insulated. Evergreen was knowledgeable, friendly, and left no trace they were ever in our house. Not only is our heating bill much lower now, but our home is generally more comfortable year-round with less temperature fluctuations. Money well spent.

This team of individuals was professional at all times. They set up barriers that kept the dust at a minimum. They conducted an air flow audit and cut the draft circulation from the outside in half by sealing cracks. They hauled out the old insulation and replaced it with blown in insulation with an R - 60 Value. They also did the rebate paperwork so that I could get my $1500.00 rebate from the state of Maine. I highly recommend Evergreen Home Performance!

Really great experience from start to finish with Evergreen. They helped us prioritize what needed to be completed first, and has made a significant difference in our hearing costs already. Plus they were really friendly and considerate to work with!

Led by Brian Robinson, the Evergreen Home Performance team just completed an insulation refit at my home. It was truly a great experience from start to finish, a period of time that was a fraction of the time that I originally anticipated due to the team's unbelievable work habits and professional knowledge of their tasks. As impressive were the communication skills and friendliness of each and every member of the team.

We had a fantastic experience working with Evergreen to insulate our roof this winter. Everyone was extremely friendly throughout the process - the crew at our home worked hard, were approachable with questions, and the team leader even showed me around the project to point out specific areas they were working to improve.

Working with Evergreen was a dream! Professional, knowledgeable, and super clean work. Communication was fast and service impeccable. The bedroom floors in our 1960's split ranch will be warm with the new insulation between them and the garage. Bring on the snow! (not really, but sort of)

Last week, my oil company asked if we were using some other kind of fuel because our usage was so much less than they had expected We are very happy with the results; the house is much more comfortable

Evergreen is the "go-to" company for improving the efficiency of your home. There are others to choose from but none so effective, honest, and capable as Evergreen. They did a great quantity of dense packing cellulose to improve our home (both for energy efficiency and for sound insulation) and it was totally successful. They are on-time, helpful, and caring. They clean up to a level that can't be over emphasized. This was the second time we employed them and we'd use them again if the opportunity came. You'll not be sorry to select Evergreen.

Several years ago Brian Robinson evaluated the crawl space at my summer home on Islesboro where I knew moisture was becoming a problem. I had done quite a bit of work in the space many years prior with mixed results. When Brian offered some suggestions, they were ideas that incorporated work previously done, and would be a relatively low cost effort to improve the situation. He offered this advice over several phone conversations of some length, informally, and at no charge.

I had gotten estimates from several other companies, but Evergreen was in another league entirely with their professionalism. If you want the job done correctly, I couldn't recommend this company enough.
