Stop Cold Drafts with A Windbreaker for Your Home

Back to Blog

It’s been a warm autumn in New England but now that it’s November, there’s no denying that the cold is creeping in fast. The Maine coast is as rugged as it is beautiful, and homeowners from Camden to Kennebunkport know the only way to weather the winter is to keep the cold air out and the warm air in.

A drafty house with cold floors and walls may seem like just another given for Maine winters, but there is a solution. Proper insulation and air sealing will stop drafts under baseboards, floor registers, and windows and warm your drafty house once and for all. It will also make it much easier to control the temperature of your home, saving you hundreds of dollars on your heating and cooling bills all year.

How the Cold Air Gets In

In winter, air sneaks through your house via the many small gaps and openings typically found in a Maine home, from the cracks in a stone foundation wall to the eaves in the attic. The warm indoor air  produced by your heating system is buoyant and rises, escaping through those openings in the upper portions of your home, around vents, plumbing, wiring, lighting fixtures and more.

This causes an interesting, and distressing, vacuum or stack effect: as the warm air rises out of your roof, cold “replacement” air is pulled into the house through the gaps down low. To make matters worse, more air moves even faster through the house when there is a large  temperature difference between the outdoor and indoor air, making the coldest nights even “breezier” inside!

How to Warm A Drafty House

Have you ever put on a cozy sweater and headed outside just to have the wind blow right through? Add a windbreaker, and you’re immediately comfy, stopping the bone-chilling breeze and holding the warmth of your sweater close to your body.

Air sealing is like a windbreaker for your house, and insulation is like the sweater. Unfortunately, many Maine homes are not only under-insulated but most are not air-sealed, leading to poor insulation performance. To make your home work well, here’s what’s needed:

  • Air Sealing

Locates all the small access areas for drafts in your home, from attic to basement, and fills them to keep the cold air from coming in around your insulation.

Keeps cold air from creeping through your foundation and into your floors.

  • Wall Insulation

Fills the empty spaces that allow the cold to seep into your home.

  • Attic Insulation

Closes the top of your building envelope to stop those drafts and stop the stack effect, and keeps the warmth in your living space for a major increase in comfort and a huge decrease in your energy bills.

Thorough, smart, informative, integrated, and communicative -- that's how my experience was with Evergreen even with the covid interruption midstream. The team picked up where they left off, insulated basement and air sealed attic and knee wall in 100' temps under the eaves! This business group was a pleasure to work with.

Evergreen listened and produced a thoughtful evaluation, proposal and comprehensive plan for our attic and basement. They exhibited excellent workmanship, teamwork, and came back as planned after the completion of the job to test the outcomes. Their overall performance as insulation and home improvement contractors is truly outstanding and we highly recommend them.

The crew members from Evergreen Home Performance each made sure to greet us every day, while maintaining their distance in this time of the pandemic. Their work took a total of nine days, spread over three weeks. Even though they were working in multiple rooms of our house, as well as the basement and attic, they were unobtrusive and always cleaned up after themselves every day. The on-sight manager kept us informed of their daily schedule so we'd know which parts of the house they'd be working on.

We had Evergreen redo the insulation in our roof. The team handling our project did a great job. They left the house spotless. We've already noticed the difference in how much better our house is retaining heat. I would definitely recommend and will use them for future projects.

Great job installing windows and insulation.

Nothing but good things to say. The guys that came and did the actual work were extremely nice and did a great job. The energy audit was thorough and I was presented with multiple improvement options, I was even given ideas for improvement that Evergreen didn't offer. I never felt like I was being "sold".

The Evergreen team was amazing from initial assessment and planning to the crew that came to complete the work. Our basement encapsulation is the best money we've spent on our house by far. The work was thorough and high quality. And what a wonderful group of people to work with. I highly recommend Evergreen!

Evergreen did a fantastic job replacing 28 windows in our house. They were friendly, courteous, and very detail oriented. Brian did a great job planning, estimating and executing the project. Our energy use has dropped significantly since the work was done.

From start to finish, our experience was incredible. Justin was extremely helpful. The crew was fast, friendly, and efficient. And most importantly, our home is WAY warmer and our heating is less costly. I'd highly recommend evergreen to anyone looking to upgrade their home!

In the final stages of selling our home, and with a closing date set, an inspection came across an unanticipated issue in our attic. We quickly called in contractors, but nobody was able to identify the source of the problem. Then we thought of Evergreen. Brian Robinson was on site the next morning and immediately identified the source (a faulty roofing job completed three years earlier which had effectively sealed up portions of the ridge vent and restricted air flow - not easily visible with a quick inspection).

Greetings one and all! I am writing to express my gratitude to all involved in my insulation project.  From start to finish, I appreciate the universal theme which was maintained by each and every one of you, to ensure that my home was insulated and protected from freezing pipes as if it was your home. Andrea, thanks for helping me navigate my way to the project. Nate, thanks for the thorough initial assessment and the time you took to explain this project to me, step by step. Brian, thanks for setting up my project - so happy

Michele

Highly recommended. Our heating usage is now less than half what it was before we had our roof insulated. Evergreen was knowledgeable, friendly, and left no trace they were ever in our house. Not only is our heating bill much lower now, but our home is generally more comfortable year-round with less temperature fluctuations. Money well spent.

We had Evergreen come out to our tiny old (100+ year old) house to see what they would recommend for decreasing our carbon footprint, saving money, and increasing our comfort in the cold season. Richard and Bryan were great to work with, patiently answering our many questions and walking us through multiple options. We could only afford to tackle a few areas this year; we ended up replacing some windows and having them weatherize the entire house.
