Basement Drainage Solutions from Evergreen Home Performance

Back to Blog

If you’ve read up on the common basement and crawlspace problems we have recently covered, you already know that a wet basement is an unhealthy hazard to your home comfort.

Here is how Evergreen Home Performance approaches fixing issues with moisture, and how you will benefit from a dry basement in your southern or midcoast Maine home.

Assessing Drainage and Moisture Infiltration

The first step towards stopping moisture from damaging your indoor air quality, your well-being, and even the structure of your home, is figuring out where it is coming from. Common causes for moisture issues in the basement can be:

  • Lack of a home drainage solution

  • Plumbing issues

  • Basement wall cracks

  • Poor ventilation

  • Infiltration of outdoor humidity through air holes and gaps

If you experience occasional flooding in your basement during a heavy rain,  or have standing water in your basement almost any time of year, you may need a sump pump installed to remove the “bulk water” from your basement. After the bulk water into your home is controlled, then the more hidden sources of moisture infiltration can be addressed.

Insulate and Air Seal

Once we have located the source(s) of moisture using a few diagnostic tools and our extensive experience fixing Maine basements, we can move forward with stopping it and keeping your basement dry. For nearly every kind of basement, we install a tough polyethylene vapor barrier to stop the leakage.

Then, we can choose from a number of basement insulation materials like Thermax rigid foam or expanding spray foam, each with its own benefits and preferred uses. For homeowners seeking to create a finished space in their basement, we can frame out walls to densely pack with cellulose insulation, leaving the walls ready for drywall or paneling.

The Benefits of a Dry Basement

The goal of our basement encapsulation process is to stabilize the temperature and humidity levels in your crawlspace or basement. But if you don’t spend much time down there, how can this affect the rest of your home?

Due to a principle called the “stack effect”, the air in your basement is often pulled up into your living space. The warmer air inside your home will most often escape from air holes and poorly insulated areas, like the attic or the top of your home. When your indoor air escapes, the air in the area underneath your feet is ready and waiting to take its place. So, if you have a humid and musty basement, you’re likely going to have a humid and musty rest of your home!

With a fully encapsulated basement or crawl space, you can expect:

  • Increased stability of indoor temperatures

  • Less indoor humidity

  • Reduced risk of mold growth

  • A more comfortable home

Got a wet, musty basement?

We can help!

We just finished a large project of air sealing and reinsulating our 1890s basement and attic which had been completely renovated 8 years ago but still felt cold and lacked proper energy assessment and corrections. We met with Justin in December and were very impressed with his knowledge, professionalism and communication skills and knew Evergreen was who we wanted to work with. Dave was our on hands project manager and was excellent. The office staff has been quick to respond and helpful as well when needed.

Evergreen did a fantastic job replacing 28 windows in our house. They were friendly, courteous, and very detail oriented. Brian did a great job planning, estimating and executing the project. Our energy use has dropped significantly since the work was done.

We are so pleased with the work the team from Evergreen Home Performance did in our home. The project included encapsulation of our basement with a reinforced vapor barrier, installation of a sump pump, spray foam insulation on the walls and insulation of the heating duct work. Everyone at Evergreen was friendly and professional. The project was completed on time and in budget. Our home is much cozier and warmer since the project was completed.

Led by Brian Robinson, the Evergreen Home Performance team just completed an insulation refit at my home. It was truly a great experience from start to finish, a period of time that was a fraction of the time that I originally anticipated due to the team's unbelievable work habits and professional knowledge of their tasks. As impressive were the communication skills and friendliness of each and every member of the team.

Evergreen has just completed Phase 2 of 2 at my home. They are professional, hard-working and courteous. They communicate well..no surprises. They've gone above and beyond to make my home comfortable and were very respectful of my home.I recommend them unequivocally!!!Many thanks to Brian, Brian, Rick, Eddie, Dawson and the rest of the Evergreen crew!!

Evergreen came out 2 years ago to do an assessment and insulate our roof. This year we had them come back and do the basement as well. They are hands-down the best crew we've ever hired to work on our house. They are experts at what they do, and super meticulous in their work. After working in our house for a week with blown insulation, there was no trace they were ever here. We've seen a huge decrease in our energy bills while at the same time the house has become way more comfortable. Can't recommend them enough.

They were highly recommended. I found them to be very knowledgeable and so helpful, with practical ideas. Despite my not living within their service area, they were generous with their knowledge, describing the usual solutions to correct leaks in my basement, and what the result is likely to be by following path A, B or C, and why. I was discouraged. Talking with Evergreen helped me see that my basement problems are far from insurmountable and really, fairly common in 100-year old homes. There are proven solutions.

In the final stages of selling our home, and with a closing date set, an inspection came across an unanticipated issue in our attic. We quickly called in contractors, but nobody was able to identify the source of the problem. Then we thought of Evergreen. Brian Robinson was on site the next morning and immediately identified the source (a faulty roofing job completed three years earlier which had effectively sealed up portions of the ridge vent and restricted air flow - not easily visible with a quick inspection).

We couldn't be more pleased with the easy, professional, high-value service from Evergreen. Having purchased an older home that had been in our family for generations, we needed multiple upgrades, including insulation throughout. Evergreen insulated our attic with blown-in cellulose, built a new, super-insulated attic hatch, sealed off the old one (which was just a piece of plywood in a closet ceiling), and also talked us through our best options to upgrade our heating system given the plans we have to add onto the house.

I never leave reviews, but had a great experience with Evergreen and wanted to spread the word! In short, we worked with them to insulate our roof this winter and have noticed surprising immediate results. The constant ice dams I have wrestled with are completely gone, and the home is noticeably more comfortable. It's a little too early to tell if our oil bill is going to reduce, but I imagine we will see an impact there as well.

The Evergreen crew from initial inception to installation were professional, on time, and left our place spotless. The end result was exceptional.

John Brown

From start to finish, our experience was incredible. Justin was extremely helpful. The crew was fast, friendly, and efficient. And most importantly, our home is WAY warmer and our heating is less costly. I'd highly recommend evergreen to anyone looking to upgrade their home!

The Evergreen crew who installed insulation in my attic were fantastic! They were very professional, worked exceedingly hard, and they did an excellent job. They were very pleasant and friendly to be around. They cleaned up beautifully after each work day, and left my home in great shape on when they walked out the door for the last time. I can't believe they were able to accomplish all that they did with heat soaring into the 80s and 90s. It was pretty unbearable up there! They have my highest praise and my gratitude.

We needed basement encapsulation to stop moisture coming up into the house from our regularly flooding basement. We had mold growing on windowsills and furniture. All the staff were friendly, respectful of our home, and easy to work with. Humidity has gone from 70% down to 40% and mold has not grown back after two months. Very grateful.

Greetings one and all! I am writing to express my gratitude to all involved in my insulation project.  From start to finish, I appreciate the universal theme which was maintained by each and every one of you, to ensure that my home was insulated and protected from freezing pipes as if it was your home. Andrea, thanks for helping me navigate my way to the project. Nate, thanks for the thorough initial assessment and the time you took to explain this project to me, step by step. Brian, thanks for setting up my project - so happy
