Can You Get a Tax Credit for Insulating Your Maine Home? (Yes, But 2025 Is the Last Year!)

Back to Blog

There’s never been a better time to upgrade your Maine home’s insulation—and save big while doing it.

Thanks to historically high incentives, including Efficiency Maine rebates and a federal insulation tax credit, homeowners have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lock in savings. As Efficiency Maine’s leading insulation rebates contractor, we’ve never seen incentives like this—but these combined savings will only be around for another few months!

Here’s what you need to know about claiming your tax credit plus local rebates before the tax credit expires at the end of 2025.

What Is the Federal Insulation Tax Credit?

The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit is a federal incentive that allows homeowners to claim 30% of qualifying insulation and air sealing upgrade costs—up to $1,200—on their taxes.

  • Up to $1,200 for qualifying insulation and air sealing costs
  • Available for upgrades like attic and wall insulation, basement waterproofing*, and crawl space encapsulation*.
  • As long as you owe federal taxes for the year in which your installation was completed, you can benefit!
  • This tax credit ends on December 31, 2025, meaning you only have a few more months to qualify!

*Any insulation and air sealing measures that are a part of these upgrades would be eligible

How to Claim Your Insulation Tax Credit

As long as your insulation upgrade is completed by the end of this year, you’ll claim the tax credit when you file your taxes next April in 2026. A tax credit isn’t the same as a rebate, so you won’t get a check in the mail. Instead, the credit lowers the amount of federal taxes you owe the IRS.

If you’re looking for more information about the 25C tax credit, Efficiency Maine and the IRS are great resources:

To make sure you get every dollar you qualify for, we recommend checking in with your tax professional. They’ll help confirm your eligibility and calculate the credit using the details from your invoice.

The Insulation Tax Credit Ends This Year

At Evergreen, we’ve been helping homeowners in Portland, Rockland, and across Southern and Coastal Maine navigate rebates, tax credits, and financing for nearly two decades. We were there when the very first Efficiency Maine rebates and financing programs launched in 2009—and have helped more Mainers qualify for insulation and energy rebates than any other contractor since!

We’re following the incentive landscape closely, and here’s our advice: If you’re thinking about home energy upgrades, don’t wait.

Total incentives—including Efficiency Maine rebates, federal tax credits, and financing—are at an all-time high. But they won’t be for much longer.

If you’ve been paying attention to the news, the tax credit is ending early. In July 2025, Congress passed a law changing the insulation tax credit so that it now ends years earlier than originally scheduled. In order to qualify, you now have to complete your insulation upgrades before January 1, 2026 in order to claim your tax credit.

Acting now will guarantee your work is done in time to qualify! The longer you wait, the more you risk missing the boat on an extra $1,200 in savings.

Stack Even More Savings: Rebates + Tax Credits + Financing

Here’s the full picture of what’s available right now:

  1. Up to $8,000 in Efficiency Maine rebates for insulation and air sealing.
  2. Up to $1,200 in federal insulation tax credits.
  3. Financing through Efficiency Maine’s Green Bank or NEIF, with monthly payments as low as $50.

In total, you could save up to $9,200, and secure a great financing rate for the balance—and Evergreen makes it simple by guiding you through every step of the process.

Evergreen did everything they said they would and more. I actually don't mind going into the basement now since they sealed it. The air quality in the house is noticeably better and it's warmer in the winter. We can even store clothing down there where before, whatever was in there would mildew. Even the spider population declined! I used to vacuum so many of them from the corners of the ceilings in the house. Not any more!

Thanks Evergreen Home Performance for helping to make our home more efficient. Many thanks as well to Bryan for the initial walk through and recommendations to make our home more efficient and to Dave, Roland, and Jacob for a job that was done professionally and courteous.  We were amazed at the level of efficiency and everyday they made sure to protect our floors, carpets, and furniture. We had daily discussions with Dave about progress and what was being done and where they were at in the project.

My husband and I bought a home on the water in Owls Head and decided to make the investment in Evergreen's recommendations for insulation. Brian Robinson spent 3 hours examining every nook and cranny before he made practical suggestions and explained them thoroughly to us.

First we have Evergreen do a BIG project worth about $20K (windows, basement, insulate & rebuild an entire wall, a door, attics, and air sealing). They were so great we had them come back later when we decided we did want to do our other door. They are professional and do great work. They take care of your home and are trustworthy, and on top of all that friendly! I highly recommend you call them!

Update 12/2018: Evergreen has completed Phase II of my house (insulating and installing air/moisture barrier on exterior walls, replacing old windows) and now that heating season is upon us, the difference is astonishing. The house is tight as a drum and so easy to keep warm. Worth every penny. Thank you all! Working with Evergreen was a positive experience from start (no charge energy audit) to finish (a MUCH more comfortable home). Brian Robinson spent a lot of time with me on the audit, explaining clearly what he was finding in my ca.

Evergreen did a fantastic job insulating our 1930's home. The onsite team was professional, clean, and really just a joy to interact with throughout the process. A blower test at the end showed a significant decrease in air leakage. I highly recommend Evergreen.

We had a fantastic experience working with Evergreen to insulate our roof this winter. Everyone was extremely friendly throughout the process - the crew at our home worked hard, were approachable with questions, and the team leader even showed me around the project to point out specific areas they were working to improve.

Joel Wentz

I would recommend Evergreen wholeheartedly because of their professionalism, their follow through, and thoughtful project planning.

I have always been impressed by the high level of service, quality of work, and excellent follow-through provided by Evergreen Home Performance in the three projects that they completed at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm over the past several years.

Several years ago Brian Robinson evaluated the crawl space at my summer home on Islesboro where I knew moisture was becoming a problem. I had done quite a bit of work in the space many years prior with mixed results. When Brian offered some suggestions, they were ideas that incorporated work previously done, and would be a relatively low cost effort to improve the situation. He offered this advice over several phone conversations of some length, informally, and at no charge.

I never leave reviews, but had a great experience with Evergreen and wanted to spread the word! In short, we worked with them to insulate our roof this winter and have noticed surprising immediate results. The constant ice dams I have wrestled with are completely gone, and the home is noticeably more comfortable. It's a little too early to tell if our oil bill is going to reduce, but I imagine we will see an impact there as well.

Bryan, Dave and the entire Evergreen team are wonderfully professional, prompt and thorough. I enjoyed working with them and look forward to continued work as we upgrade our home! Thank you so much for your professionalism, fairness, time and diligence.

Evergreen came back this year to finish insulating our house. We have been remodeling and renovating an 1850s cape for several years. Their employees are very professional and pleasant to deal with. Over several years Brian Robinson has been able to schedule us in for several small areas that needed addressing and finally turning a room we used to close off in the winter into a comfortable usable space. We primarily heat with wood and since Evergreens great work our furnace has only come on ONCE this winter. Fantastic. Really satisfied customer in Thomaston.

They were highly recommended. I found them to be very knowledgeable and so helpful, with practical ideas. Despite my not living within their service area, they were generous with their knowledge, describing the usual solutions to correct leaks in my basement, and what the result is likely to be by following path A, B or C, and why. I was discouraged. Talking with Evergreen helped me see that my basement problems are far from insurmountable and really, fairly common in 100-year old homes. There are proven solutions.

Evergreen is the "go-to" company for improving the efficiency of your home. There are others to choose from but none so effective, honest, and capable as Evergreen. They did a great quantity of dense packing cellulose to improve our home (both for energy efficiency and for sound insulation) and it was totally successful. They are on-time, helpful, and caring. They clean up to a level that can't be over emphasized. This was the second time we employed them and we'd use them again if the opportunity came. You'll not be sorry to select Evergreen.
