Postcards from Nemo

In case you hadn’t heard, Maine got buried under 2 to 3 feet of snow last weekend, thanks to winter storm Nemo. We knew it was coming, so we all traipsed to the grocery store and topped off the fuel tanks and got ready. And at Evergreen, we put together a postcard about ice dams. Did you get one?

Starve the Beast!

Energy efficiency is regularly called our cheapest, cleanest energy resource – but you don’t have to take it from me. The NRDC has put together a short, ridiculously fun video about how energy efficiency can help you “starve the beast” of dirty power and invest in your home, your environment, and your economy.

Don’t Just Wait for the Thaw

With last week’s sub-zero temperatures, it’s no surprise that we’ve gotten a fair number of calls about frozen pipes.

Arctic Weather Makes for Great Infrared Scans

All summer long, we assure people that our infrared cameras are sensitive enough to pick up even a few degree difference. We stand by that, but there’s no doubt about it: arctic weather makes for some pretty dramatic infrared thermography. That’s because IR cameras detect the infrared radiation emitted by all objects. Since the amount of infrared radiation increases with temperature, thermography lets us see temperature differences. The bigger the temperature difference, the prettier the picture.

Maine Braces for 100-degree Temp Swing

Remember how strangely warm it was last week? Temperatures topped 50 degrees last week, but the National Weather Service predicts that sustained winds of 15-25 miles per hour will make it feel like 45 below zero this week. Did you get that? 45 degrees BELOW zero.

Don’t Mess with CO

As I mentioned on WERU’s Common Health show this week, home performance is about a lot more than comfort and energy savings. Those things are important, of course, but they aren’t worth a thing if your home isn’t safe and healthy.

Common Health: Healthy Homes

It was snowing Wednesday morning, but that didn’t stop me from driving to WERU to participate in Jim Fisher’s Common Health radio program. Bobbi Harris of Washington Hancock Community Agency and Maria Donahue of Healthy Acadia were also in the studio, and we had a lively talk about how to maintain safe, warm, healthy homes. Some of the highlights:

Solid federal tax policy must promote energy-efficiency incentives

This opinion piece by Evergreen CEO Richard Burbank and Energy Circle CEO Peter Troast appeared in the Portland Press Herald on December 15. At the moment, the national political dialogue is focused on the looming “fiscal cliff,” tax reform and economic policy.

A thorough inspection of our (older) house and its energy needs. Competent and personable work crew.

I used to spend winters in the bathtub because my house was so cold. This was my first winter roaming around my whole house comfortably. This even led me to decorate a little. My heating oil usage has been reduced by over a quarter: I rarely have to boost the thermostat because the temp stays at a constant. The Efficiency Maine rebates, together with the energy savings, make it affordable for me to pay for the loan I took out to finance the project. I do not worry about my pipes freezing.

We had Evergreen come out to our tiny old (100+ year old) house to see what they would recommend for decreasing our carbon footprint, saving money, and increasing our comfort in the cold season. Richard and Bryan were great to work with, patiently answering our many questions and walking us through multiple options. We could only afford to tackle a few areas this year; we ended up replacing some windows and having them weatherize the entire house.

Our house still the most efficient home we’ve ever lived in. And we have you folks to thank for that! A special howdy to Brian Robinson please!

Bruce O’Donal and Eva Butler

Highly recommended. Our heating usage is now less than half what it was before we had our roof insulated. Evergreen was knowledgeable, friendly, and left no trace they were ever in our house. Not only is our heating bill much lower now, but our home is generally more comfortable year-round with less temperature fluctuations. Money well spent.

We needed basement encapsulation to stop moisture coming up into the house from our regularly flooding basement. We had mold growing on windowsills and furniture. All the staff were friendly, respectful of our home, and easy to work with. Humidity has gone from 70% down to 40% and mold has not grown back after two months. Very grateful.

My husband and I bought a home on the water in Owls Head and decided to make the investment in Evergreen's recommendations for insulation. Brian Robinson spent 3 hours examining every nook and cranny before he made practical suggestions and explained them thoroughly to us.

Greetings one and all! I am writing to express my gratitude to all involved in my insulation project.  From start to finish, I appreciate the universal theme which was maintained by each and every one of you, to ensure that my home was insulated and protected from freezing pipes as if it was your home. Andrea, thanks for helping me navigate my way to the project. Nate, thanks for the thorough initial assessment and the time you took to explain this project to me, step by step. Brian, thanks for setting up my project - so happy

We initially contacted Evergreen through Efficiency Maine for an energy audit, which was conducted promptly and professionally by Justin McEdward, one of their Energy Advisors who is BPI-certified. After a thorough inspection of our newly purchased home, Justin explained in great detail what we needed and did not need. It was agreed that Evergreen would remove all of the existing attic insulation, which was not adequate, and replace it with blown in cellulose, to a rating of R-60.

Evergreen has a professional and reliable team of people who do excellent work. If you want the best of the best in the area, select Evergreen to accomplish your insulation needs.

Our basement was the eyesore of the house. I wanted to make improvements, but first needed to make structural, insulating and moisture mitigation improvements. Evergreen was professional and competent in taking on a complex project of not only encapsulation and insulation of basement and crawlspace, but completed needed improvements to the structural integrity of the wood floor platform above a crawlspace and brought in a concrete contractor to pour where there was once a rotting, tiered wood platform - replacing that area with a more functional and tight tiered concrete area.

We just finished a large project air sealing and reinsulating our 1890s basement and attic. It had been completely renovated 8 years ago, but still felt cold, and lacked proper energy assessment and corrections. We met with Justin in December and were very impressed with his knowledge, professionalism and communication skills and knew Evergreen was who we wanted to work with. Dave was our on hands project manager and was excellent. The office staff has been quick to respond and helpful as well when needed.

Evergreen has just completed Phase 2 of 2 at my home. They are professional, hard-working and courteous. They communicate well..no surprises. They've gone above and beyond to make my home comfortable and were very respectful of my home.I recommend them unequivocally!!!Many thanks to Brian, Brian, Rick, Eddie, Dawson and the rest of the Evergreen crew!!

David Henry Feldman

Evergreen has insulated two homes that we've owned now and both times we experienced exceptional service and craftsmanship. Our rep, Justin, went above and beyond answering questions and the installation team was attentive to every detail, including pulling out old poorly installed insulation and redoing a bathroom fan that wasn't up to current code. They also left the place spotless every day! Our home is already so much warmer this fall and we are looking forward to using less oil this winter.

Evergreen Home Performance shows its expertise from start to finish. Evergreen did three house projects in winter/spring/summer 2020 for me, attic insulation, crawl space under a porch insulation, and basement foam/vapor barrier. From my initial discussion with Bryan, I understood the reasons for choosing different types of insulation, the associated costs, and time estimates. Evergreen scheduled in advance, came when they said they would, and the crews were highly professional in their work and demeanor.
