Green Buildings Open House features Rockland Public Library

The homes, commercial, and residential buildings in Maine are among the oldest in the country, and the architecture of these buildings helps define the character of New England’s towns. Unfortunately, it also helps define our fuel bills.

Last year, the historic Rockland Public Library took control of those bills with an energy efficiency retrofit that cut the historic building’s energy use in half. Evergreen’s six-week, 1000-labor-hour insulation and airsealing project got a lot of attention – enough so that the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association asked the Library to participate in this year’s Green Buildings Open House on Saturday, October 13.

“We believe the Public Library in Rockland, Maine is a great example of energy efficiency,” said NESEA’s Kelsey Hobson. “This is a great opportunity to show people the energy efficiency makeover that the library has undergone.”

The Library is one of more than 500 sites participating in the Open House, which kicks off National Energy Action Month by offering inspiration and information about energy efficiency. Rockland’s Energy Committee will lead brief tours of the building and explain key aspects of the upgrades from 11 am to 3 pm, and Evergreen will give presentations on the project at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm.

Evergreen came out 2 years ago to do an assessment and insulate our roof. This year we had them come back and do the basement as well. They are hands-down the best crew we've ever hired to work on our house. They are experts at what they do, and super meticulous in their work. After working in our house for a week with blown insulation, there was no trace they were ever here. From beginning to end – that is from the moment Justin McEdward stepped into our home to assess our energy conservation needs until the crew left – the Evergreen Home Performance process went absolutely smoothly. I waited a year to write this review. Evergreen finished our job late last winter. Terrific results!!! we've gone from 12-day propane deliveries to 30+ day propane deliveries. Evergreen was so helpful in securing us Efficiency Maine funding for a big attic insulation project early this winter. They did all of the paperwork, and totally guided us through a vermiculite removal process that included a payment from a trust for the procedure. I could instantly feel the second floor being so much warmer than before. The boiler does not kick on nearly as frequently since they completed the job. It was worth every penny! Brian Robinson was so thorough throughout the whole process including a full walk through after the job had been completed.

Our basement was the eyesore of the house. I wanted to make improvements, but first needed to make structural, insulating and moisture mitigation improvements. Evergreen was professional and competent in taking on a complex project of not only encapsulation and insulation of basement and crawlspace, but completed needed improvements to the structural integrity of the wood floor platform above a crawlspace and brought in a concrete contractor to pour where there was once a rotting, tiered wood platform - replacing that area with a more functional and tight tiered concrete area.
