Retrofitting the Rockland Public Library: Setting the Scene

The Rockland Public Library attics have several access points, but the main hatch opens just above this beautiful arch. We’re spending a lot of time at the Library this month, thanks to a major energy efficiency upgrade that we estimate will save taxpayers more than $10,000 in heating costs every year. Led by BPI-certified Project Manager Svea Tullberg, our crew is insulating the roof slopes, wall cavities, rim joists, and foundation walls in the 110-year-old building.

Though the Library’s building performance left something to be desired, the construction techniques have our production crew ooh-ing and ahh-ing. Take a look at the lath and plaster construction on the side of the arch (right) and the top of the dome (left).

Several years ago Brian Robinson evaluated the crawl space at my summer home on Islesboro where I knew moisture was becoming a problem. I had done quite a bit of work in the space many years prior with mixed results. They did all of the paperwork, and totally guided us through a vermiculite removal process that included a payment from a trust for the procedure. I could instantly feel the second floor being so much warmer than before. The boiler does not kick on nearly as frequently since they completed the job. It was worth every penny!
