Air Sealing and the Stack Effect

Sometimes building science just isn’t fair. It doesn’t care how much insulation you buy, or even how hard you work installing it. Nooooo, the laws of physics insist that your house is a system, and that insulation can only do its job when it goes hand in hand with air sealing.

Art, Energy Efficiency, and the Economy

We’re abuzz with the news of a new neighbor. The Center for Maine Contemporary Art announced last week that it’s moving to downtown Rockland – a stone’s throw from the Strand Theater and the Farnsworth Art Museum, and right across the street from Evergreen Home Performance.

Before You Pre-Buy…

The kids aren’t even out of school yet, and next winter’s oil prices are already on everyone’s minds. That’s because local oil companies are rolling out their budget plans for next winter’s heating season, presenting consumers with the annual debate: to pre-buy or not? Every year, I look up this personal finance blog for its clear discussion of the most common options. He hasn’t posted predictions for the coming heating season yet, but the concepts remain the same.

Behavioral Science Can Lower Your Energy bill

Entreaties to save money, save the planet, or be a good citizen may not inspire people to conserve energy, but positive peer pressure sure does.  In this TED talk, Alex Laskey, founder and president of Opower, explains how human psychology can make us all better, wiser energy users, with lower bills to prove it.

Happy June!

What is there to say about June? It’s either 90 degrees or cold and rainy, and three days into the month, we’ve already managed both. Since there’s no cutesy weather saying (no in like a lion, out like a lamb; no April showers or May flowers), I’m proposing this one: Home Performance in June’s not a moment too soon.

Nothing Lost is Everyone’s Gain: NIST Net Zero Energy House

There are a lot of houses out there, and a lot of them are inefficient, old, and uncomfortable – especially in Maine. From a resource management perspective, it makes sense to retrofit those homes rather than raze and rebuild. That’s why we do what we do. That said, people are going to keep building new homes. It makes sense for that new construction to incorporate as many energy efficient technologies as possible. Green building needs to become the new normal.

Braving Basements, Attics – and Oceans

You might think that dank basements and hot attics would provide enough excitement for Energy Advisor Jessie Davis. You’d be wrong. Jessie is training for a 3-mile ocean swim to Islesboro, one of fifteen year-round island communities off the coast of Maine. The swim is a fundraiser for the Lifeflight Foundation, which provides emergency medical services for Maine’s rural and island communities.

Our house still the most efficient home we’ve ever lived in. And we have you folks to thank for that! A special howdy to Brian Robinson please!

Bruce O’Donal and Eva Butler

We initially contacted Evergreen through Efficiency Maine for an energy audit, which was conducted promptly and professionally by Justin McEdward, one of their Energy Advisors who is BPI-certified. After a thorough inspection of our newly purchased home, Justin explained in great detail what we needed and did not need. It was agreed that Evergreen would remove all of the existing attic insulation, which was not adequate, and replace it with blown in cellulose, to a rating of R-60.

Working with Brian and with Nate and the rest of the crew was a pleasure. They made everything very easy and understandable. This was a major renovation and they were always at the ready with a lot of information. We had an extensive renovation on the basement which was a dirt basement and it came out beautifully. We can already tell from all of the insulation work what a difference it's made in sound and temperature. Brian worked with me on the rebates that are available when you do this kind of work. I would highly recommend this company to…

We needed basement encapsulation to stop moisture coming up into the house from our regularly flooding basement. We had mold growing on windowsills and furniture. All the staff were friendly, respectful of our home, and easy to work with. Humidity has gone from 70% down to 40% and mold has not grown back after two months. Very grateful.

In the final stages of selling our home, and with a closing date set, an inspection came across an unanticipated issue in our attic. We quickly called in contractors, but nobody was able to identify the source of the problem. Then we thought of Evergreen. Brian Robinson was on site the next morning and immediately identified the source (a faulty roofing job completed three years earlier which had effectively sealed up portions of the ridge vent and restricted air flow - not easily visible with a quick inspection).

I cant say enough about this company and the benefits that it created for our family. They are very professional and have effectively re-insulated our home. The heating bill proves the point.

Awesome company. It was a few years ago that they did the audit and then we commissioned them to do the work. We subsequently sold our house and moved to South Africa, but their level of service and expertise will live on.

Odette Brown

I highly recommend Evergreen! 1st, I had a home efficiency inspection (that was free) & Bryan P. was great! He took the time needed, asked & listened to what I thought were priorities, explained clearly what he thought were priorities & why, then gave me numerous options. No pressure whatsoever. Then I had my attic sealed & insulated as the 1st step & Bryan came along on day 1 to introduce everyone & make sure we were all on the same page. Bruce's team (inc. Kelsey & Roland) did the work - they were exceptional!!

Kennebunk

The Evergreen crew from initial inception to installation were professional, on time, and left our place spotless. The end result was exceptional.

John Brown

My experience with Evergreen was excellent. From their thorough and thoughtful initial consultation to their detailed post-work visit, the team was professional, knowledgeable, and responsive. Their workmanship was top notch. Our home is now much warmer and more efficient. I highly recommend their services!

Evergreen removed and replaced the insulation in my attic. They did a great job!, Crew was excellent, and the whole thing went smoothly, and the attic was NOT easy to get into or work in, so kudos to some hard work done well!

Greetings one and all! I am writing to express my gratitude to all involved in my insulation project.  From start to finish, I appreciate the universal theme which was maintained by each and every one of you, to ensure that my home was insulated and protected from freezing pipes as if it was your home. Andrea, thanks for helping me navigate my way to the project. Nate, thanks for the thorough initial assessment and the time you took to explain this project to me, step by step. Brian, thanks for setting up my project - so happy

Michele

Evergreen is the "go-to" company for improving the efficiency of your home. There are others to choose from but none so effective, honest, and capable as Evergreen. They did a great quantity of dense packing cellulose to improve our home (both for energy efficiency and for sound insulation) and it was totally successful. They are on-time, helpful, and caring. They clean up to a level that can't be over emphasized. This was the second time we employed them and we'd use them again if the opportunity came. You'll not be sorry to select Evergreen.

I used to spend winters in the bathtub because my house was so cold. This was my first winter roaming around my whole house comfortably. This even led me to decorate a little. My heating oil usage has been reduced by over a quarter: I rarely have to boost the thermostat because the temp stays at a constant. The Efficiency Maine rebates, together with the energy savings, make it affordable for me to pay for the loan I took out to finance the project. I do not worry about my pipes freezing.

We just finished a large project of air sealing and reinsulating our 1890s basement and attic which had been completely renovated 8 years ago but still felt cold and lacked proper energy assessment and corrections. We met with Justin in December and were very impressed with his knowledge, professionalism and communication skills and knew Evergreen was who we wanted to work with. Dave was our on hands project manager and was excellent. The office staff has been quick to respond and helpful as well when needed.
