What’s it like to work with Evergreen Home Performance?

Seeing inside the walls changed everything for this Freeport home

During an infrared tour of their 1850s-era home, Sam and Linda saw firsthand how insulation blown into their walls decades earlier had settled, leaving hidden gaps and heat loss. After air sealing and insulation upgrades, the impact was clear – within a year, they had $800 left in their fuel account and a noticeably more comfortable home.

How Matt and Christa cut their utility bills by 73% in Portland

Matt and Christa finally found a home in a Portland neighborhood they love, but their 1895 fixer-upper was drafty and expensive to heat. With targeted wall insulation and attic and basement upgrades, Evergreen reduced air leakage by 36% and cut annual energy costs by 73%, from about $4,500 to $1,200. With Efficiency Maine rebates, the project paid for itself in less than six years.

Common questions about Maine wall insulation

There are a few clear signs your walls may not have enough insulation, especially in a cold Maine winter. Watch for:

  • Rooms that are colder than others
  • Drafts near outlets or along baseboards
  • Walls that feel cold to the touch
  • Higher-than-normal heating bills
  • Outside noise coming through more than expected
  • Ice dams forming on your roof

These are all signs that heat may be escaping through your walls. The most reliable way to know is with a professional energy audit. At Evergreen, we use thermal imaging and blower door testing to pinpoint where insulation is missing and how much comfort and savings you could gain.

Dense-pack cellulose is usually the best insulation option for older Maine homes.

It can be installed into existing walls with minimal disruption, fills gaps where older insulation has settled, and helps slow down the air movement that drives heat loss during long Maine winters.

Dense-pack cellulose works especially well in houses built before modern framing standards – think Portland, Deering Center, Freeport, or midcoast homes with plaster walls and irregular cavities. Homeowners typically notice warmer rooms, fewer drafts, and lower heating bills pretty quickly.

Step 1: Precision drilling

We create small, precise 2.5–3” access holes either inside the home (often behind baseboards or in closets) or on the exterior behind siding or shingles. These openings are just large enough to install insulation and small enough to repair cleanly and neatly.

Step 2: Dense-pack cellulose installation

Before insulating, we seal key air leaks with spray foam to limit air movement inside the walls. Then we dense-pack cellulose into each wall cavity so it fills gaps left by settled or missing insulation and performs as designed, even in older homes.

Step 3: Careful restoration

After installation, we patch and restore every access point, including reinstalling siding on exterior walls. Interior areas are left caulked, primed, and paint-ready. The visible change is minimal, but the comfort and efficiency improvements are noticeable right away.

Our goal in every installation is the same:

Once the work is complete, we want to leave no or very minimal visible signs of the installation process, just a home that feels more comfortable and energy efficient.

Sometimes we install wall insulation from the inside of the home, and other times we work from the exterior – it depends on the wall construction and what will be the least disruptive option. When we work inside, access holes are typically placed in discreet locations like closets or behind baseboards.

If we install insulation from the outside and your home has wood siding or shingles, we’ll often remove individual pieces to access the wall cavities and then carefully reinstall them.

Wall insulation costs vary based on the size and age of your home, how the walls are accessed, and the amount of insulation needed.

For many older Maine homes, dense-pack cellulose wall insulation typically falls in the $4,000 to $12,000 range before rebates, with larger or more complex homes sometimes costing more.

We start with a free consultation so we can look at your walls, identify air leaks, and provide a clear, written estimate based on your home – not a guess.

Many homeowners qualify for Efficiency Maine rebates, which can significantly reduce the final cost. Low-interest financing through the Green Bank is also available, with payments starting at around $50 per month, making it easier to improve comfort without a large upfront expense.

We help homeowners take full advantage of generous wall insulation rebates available through Efficiency Maine. Because rebate levels go up and down, the best way to understand what’s available right now and what you qualify for is to schedule a free consultation.

During your consult we’ll outline your best options for improving your home’s comfort and efficiency, show you the rebates you’re eligible for, and explain how to combine rebates with low-interest financing to make upgrades more affordable.
