My experience at Evergreen helped me grow as a person in many ways. Most notably was the amount of practical skills I learned about building science and construction. As someone who lacked construction experience prior to working at Evergreen, the company and project managers were patient and encouraging with me and taught me a tremendous amount of new skills in a relatively short amount of time. I now have the understanding and the know-how to make my own home energy efficient which will save on money and resources in the future. The hard skills are transferable to other aspects of home projects or maintenance as well. I’ve become much more confident when approaching these types of problems.

Evergreen taught me soft skills as well. The company modeled what a competent and professional business should look like. They always strove for quality over quantity making sure both their customers and employees were happy. I always felt like I had an equal voice in the company and that they cared for my best interest while treating me fairly. It was also satisfying knowing that we were doing the job the right way, not just the easy and cheap way. I felt that the work truly made a difference in the community and I took satisfaction when the homeowners were happy with the results. Evergreen was a fun company to work for as the strove to maintain a healthy and positive work culture. Working for Evergreen I found a group of like minded folks who care about making a positive contribution to the environment and community. Everyone in the Evergreen team likes to have fun, while keeping an eye on quality and customer service. After working a variety of jobs in construction, it was refreshing to find such an easy-going group. While at Evergreen, I learned the latest methods in home performance and installed exceptional quality windows and doors. I feel that Evergreen is a great place to have a career or gain the skills to go on in the construction or home performance field.

I have been with Evergreen since 2013. What drew me in was a care for the environment and interest in construction, specifically in the invaluable work of repairing and improving existing buildings. At that time, Evergreen was just beginning to do work in the Portland market and the person who managed the building science program at Southern Maine Community College recommended Evergreen to me as a strong, growing company that I should consider. All these years later, I consider reaching out to Evergreen to be one of the best decisions I have ever made, as I have learned so much about historical building construction, building science, and modern best practices in my time here. Beyond that, what has always stood out to me about Evergreen is the people. From the top on down, smart, fun people are what makes it possible to do the hard and often dirty work. Even when you are hot and sweaty at the end of a long day, if you are having fun and laughing together, life is good.

The work I do in Maine people’s homes is not easy. But it’s worthwhile to me and here’s why.

I have worked for Evergreen for a total of five years, first as a field technician and currently as a project manager. Having worked in the trades for multiple outfits over the last 25 years, I can honestly say Evergreen is the best company I have ever been involved with.

Our management team is incredibly supportive. We are very well trained to do our job safely and skillfully. They understand we have a life outside of work and are flexible with family and personal obligations. Our compensation and benefits reflects our needs for financial stability. Everyone in the office, from ownership to management, is available for questions or concerns. The “open door policy” is not just a saying at Evergreen; everyone really cares. Perhaps best of all, our hard work is acknowledged and appreciated.

My job at Evergreen is intellectually challenging and engaging. I have the pleasure of working with competent, committed people who truly act as a team. I am given opportunities for personal growth doing work that is meaningful. The work we do has a positive impact for the homeowners and the environmental health of our communities and our state. It is incredibly gratifying to know the work we do has real world benefits.

And yes, we do have some fun while we’re at it.
