Prioritizing Projects for a 19th Century Deering Center Home

Matt and Christa knew that the home they had just purchased in the neighborhood they loved — for the price they could afford — was going to need a lot of work. Their new home was a three-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath, 2,200-square-foot single family structure, built circa 1895 and last updated in the mid-1960s. It still had original plumbing, knob and tube wiring, lath and plaster walls, and a mix of hardwood and pumpkin pine flooring. The original wood stove heating system had been converted to an oil boiler with single pipe steam radiators. The house had no insulation to speak of — unless you count the many layers of wallpaper covering the walls.

Making a 2005 Palermo, ME Home Comfortable with Insulation & Air Sealing

After purchasing a home in Palermo, ME, the homeowner, Denise, quickly realized there were some serious issues. During the winter, the boiler was running for over 20 hours a day, and the master bedroom was still cold, despite having a dedicated baseboard radiator and thermostat (the previous homeowners used the boiler, an LP Fireplace insert, and two wood stoves to stay warm). The final straw was when an upstairs baseboard radiator froze and then burst, sending water flooding into the main floor and basement.

A Profound Difference Worth Every Penny

When Nancy fell in love with this 24-year-young gambrel-style house, she threw herself into personalizing it with cosmetic upgrades that made it hers. But worrying about heating bills and uneven temperatures kept her from fully enjoying her home. “When my pipes froze, I knew I needed to do something,” says Nancy. “I’d seen the Evergreen signs around, so I knew exactly who to call.”

Eliminating Basement Moisture – and Anxiety

Wyatt and Emily hadn’t lived in their 1930s bungalow very long before they called Evergreen. From “crazy ice dams” to basement moisture, they had a list of concerns that weren’t going away – or allowing them to fully enjoy their home. “It didn’t seem like the house was about to fall down, but it didn’t seem sustainable either,” says Wyatt.

Planning for Sustainable Comfort

When Hans & Jen bought this beautiful gambrel in the heart of Brooks, they aimed to turn the “beautiful – but drafty as all get-out” house into a cozy, dry home. They scheduled an energy audit and got right to work on efficiency upgrades, and like many homeowners, they’re working in phases.

Being Environmentally Responsible – and Financially Savvy

When Matt & Patsy bought their first house, they knew the 1890 New Englander needed work. “The bones were solid, but there were a lot of issues,” Matt reports, including a wet basement, drafty rooms, and high energy usage that worried their budget and their consciences.

Investing in Comfort – and Savings

Jen grew up spending summers down the road from this Cushing, Maine cottage, so she snapped it up when it went on the market in 1985. But transforming it into a cozy home took years. She moved walls, reconfigured rooms, and renovated the living space, but didn’t know where to start on energy efficiency. “I was afraid that if I did something myself, I’d do the wrong thing and make it worse.”

Aging in Place, Warm & Cozy

Vera and her husband built this log cabin in Cushing, Maine 30 years ago and had always heated with wood they cut on their own land. But when her husband passed away, Vera couldn’t keep up with the chopping and hauling. She began relying on the oil furnace – and noticing all the drafts. “It’s been such a cold home, and I knew I couldn’t keep living there if I couldn’t get it warm,” says Vera.

Evergreen came out 2 years ago to do an assessment and insulate our roof. This year we had them come back and do the basement as well. They are hands-down the best crew we've ever hired to work on our house. They are experts at what they do, and super meticulous in their work. After working in our house for a week with blown insulation, there was no trace they were ever here. We've seen a huge decrease in our energy bills while at the same time the house has become way more comfortable. Can't recommend them enough.

The Evergreen team was amazing from initial assessment and planning to the crew that came to complete the work. Our basement encapsulation is the best money we've spent on our house by far. The work was thorough and high quality. And what a wonderful group of people to work with. I highly recommend Evergreen!

Martha Bracy

I cant say enough about this company and the benefits that it created for our family. They are very professional and have effectively re-insulated our home. The heating bill proves the point.

We had Evergreen come out to our tiny old (100+ year old) house to see what they would recommend for decreasing our carbon footprint, saving money, and increasing our comfort in the cold season. Richard and Bryan were great to work with, patiently answering our many questions and walking us through multiple options. We could only afford to tackle a few areas this year; we ended up replacing some windows and having them weatherize the entire house.

Several years ago Brian Robinson evaluated the crawl space at my summer home on Islesboro where I knew moisture was becoming a problem. I had done quite a bit of work in the space many years prior with mixed results. When Brian offered some suggestions, they were ideas that incorporated work previously done, and would be a relatively low cost effort to improve the situation. He offered this advice over several phone conversations of some length, informally, and at no charge.

Last week, my oil company asked if we were using some other kind of fuel because our usage was so much less than they had expected We are very happy with the results; the house is much more comfortable

Our house still the most efficient home we’ve ever lived in. And we have you folks to thank for that! A special howdy to Brian Robinson please!

Bruce O’Donal and Eva Butler

From beginning to end – that is from the moment Justin McEdward stepped into our home to assess our energy conservation needs until the crew left – the Evergreen Home Performance process went absolutely smoothly. Justin made a thorough inspection and took pictures with an infrared camera. His proposal described the scope of work in detail, and he explained what we could expect the proposed work to accomplish. Our proposal was forthcoming within a couple of days, and Justin was available to discuss it and answer questions.

Adrienne Harkavy

In the final stages of selling our home, and with a closing date set, an inspection came across an unanticipated issue in our attic. We quickly called in contractors, but nobody was able to identify the source of the problem. Then we thought of Evergreen. Brian Robinson was on site the next morning and immediately identified the source (a faulty roofing job completed three years earlier which had effectively sealed up portions of the ridge vent and restricted air flow - not easily visible with a quick inspection).

We had Evergreen energy do blow-in cellulose. I was very happy with the result. They tested with blower-door before and after. House is now MUCH warmer. Also, in the time since when I've had to open walls for various access, I've been impressed with how they got the insulation packed in everywhere. I'd use them again.

Peaks Island

Evergreen has insulated two homes that we've owned now and both times we experienced exceptional service and craftsmanship. Our rep, Justin, went above and beyond answering questions and the installation team was attentive to every detail, including pulling out old poorly installed insulation and redoing a bathroom fan that wasn't up to current code. They also left the place spotless every day! Our home is already so much warmer this fall and we are looking forward to using less oil this winter.

Falmouth

We had a fantastic experience working with Evergreen to insulate our roof this winter. Everyone was extremely friendly throughout the process - the crew at our home worked hard, were approachable with questions, and the team leader even showed me around the project to point out specific areas they were working to improve.

Joel Wentz

Evergreen did an amazing job insulating our historic home. Their professional staff worked hard to ensure the tough areas in the attic were covered, and clearly communicated their progress. We are seeing the results with our discounted heating bills. Thank you, Evergreen!

Melissa Knoll

Portland

Our basement was the eyesore of the house. I wanted to make improvements, but first needed to make structural, insulating and moisture mitigation improvements. Evergreen was professional and competent in taking on a complex project of not only encapsulation and insulation of basement and crawlspace, but completed needed improvements to the structural integrity of the wood floor platform above a crawlspace and brought in a concrete contractor to pour where there was once a rotting, tiered wood platform - replacing that area with a more functional and tight tiered concrete area.

Duane B.

East Boothbay

Evergreen listened and produced a thoughtful evaluation, proposal and comprehensive plan for our attic and basement. They exhibited excellent workmanship, teamwork, and came back as planned after the completion of the job to test the outcomes. Their overall performance as insulation and home improvement contractors is truly outstanding and we highly recommend them.
