Retrofitting the Rockland Public Library: Setting the Scene

The Rockland Public Library attics have several access points, but the main hatch opens just above this beautiful arch. We’re spending a lot of time at the Library this month, thanks to a major energy efficiency upgrade that we estimate will save taxpayers more than $10,000 in heating costs every year. Led by BPI-certified Project Manager Svea Tullberg, our crew is insulating the roof slopes, wall cavities, rim joists, and foundation walls in the 110-year-old building.

Though the Library’s building performance left something to be desired, the construction techniques have our production crew ooh-ing and ahh-ing. Take a look at the lath and plaster construction on the side of the arch (right) and the top of the dome (left).

Evergreen came out 2 years ago to do an assessment and insulate our roof. This year we had them come back and do the basement as well. They are hands-down the best crew we've ever hired to work on our house. They are experts at what they do, and super meticulous in their work. After working in our house for a week with blown insulation, there was no trace they were ever here. We've seen a huge decrease in our energy bills while at the same time the house has become way more comfortable. Can't recommend them enough.

We just finished a large project of air sealing and reinsulating our 1890s basement and attic which had been completely renovated 8 years ago but still felt cold and lacked proper energy assessment and corrections. We met with Justin in December and were very impressed with his knowledge, professionalism and communication skills and knew Evergreen was who we wanted to work with. Dave was our on hands project manager and was excellent. The office staff has been quick to respond and helpful as well when needed.

Evergreen came back this year to finish insulating our house. We have been remodeling and renovating an 1850s cape for several years. Their employees are very professional and pleasant to deal with. Over several years Brian Robinson has been able to schedule us in for several small areas that needed addressing and finally turning a room we used to close off in the winter into a comfortable usable space. Several years ago Brian Robinson evaluated the crawl space at my summer home on Islesboro where I knew moisture was becoming a problem. I had done quite a bit of work in the space many years prior with mixed results. Insulating the attic, walls and basement with Evergreen allowed us to tear a 50-year-old furnace, ductwork and oil tank out of the basement and now heat the home with new heat pumps. Evergreen also added 100 sq ft of clean, new storage space to the attic!
