Kitchen Tour features Energy Efficient Home

One of 8 homes on Merryspring’s annual Kitchen Tour boasts more than an enlarged, custom kitchen. The 1880s farmhouse got an energy efficiency upgrade from Evergreen this year, including basement encapsulation and attic insulation that made the home more comfortable and affordable.

Participants on the annual kitchen tour can learn more about the energy upgrades while admiring the work of the homeowner-cabinetmaker and enjoying tastings from local chefs. Rockport’s Blue Sky Cantina is catering the morning, and Camden’s Conscious Kitchen will provide treats for the afternoon.

Tour the kitchen (#2 on the tour) for $10, or visit all 8 featured kitchens for $25 ($35 on the day of the tour). Proceeds benefit Merryspring Nature Center, a non-profit park and educational center with nature trails and gardens open to the public every day. This member-supported organization offers talks, classes, and workshops throughout the year.

Evergreen did everything they said they would and more. I actually don't mind going into the basement now since they sealed it. The air quality in the house is noticeably better and it's warmer in the winter. We can even store clothing down there where before, whatever was in there would mildew. Even the spider population declined! I used to vacuum so many of them from the corners of the ceilings in the house. Not any more!

The crew members from Evergreen Home Performance each made sure to greet us every day, while maintaining their distance in this time of the pandemic. Their work took a total of nine days, spread over three weeks. This team of individuals was professional at all times. They set up barriers that kept the dust at a minimum. They conducted an air flow audit and cut the draft circulation from the outside in half by sealing cracks. They hauled out the old insulation and replaced it with blown in insulation with an R - 60 Value. They also did the rebate paperwork so that I could get my $1500.00 rebate from the state of Maine.
