Kitchen Tour features Energy Efficient Home

One of 8 homes on Merryspring’s annual Kitchen Tour boasts more than an enlarged, custom kitchen. The 1880s farmhouse got an energy efficiency upgrade from Evergreen this year, including basement encapsulation and attic insulation that made the home more comfortable and affordable.

Participants on the annual kitchen tour can learn more about the energy upgrades while admiring the work of the homeowner-cabinetmaker and enjoying tastings from local chefs. Rockport’s Blue Sky Cantina is catering the morning, and Camden’s Conscious Kitchen will provide treats for the afternoon.

Tour the kitchen (#2 on the tour) for $10, or visit all 8 featured kitchens for $25 ($35 on the day of the tour). Proceeds benefit Merryspring Nature Center, a non-profit park and educational center with nature trails and gardens open to the public every day. This member-supported organization offers talks, classes, and workshops throughout the year.

We just finished a large project of air sealing and reinsulating our 1890s basement and attic which had been completely renovated 8 years ago but still felt cold and lacked proper energy assessment and corrections. We met with Justin in December and were very impressed with his knowledge, professionalism and communication skills and knew Evergreen was who we wanted to work with. Evergreen was so helpful in securing us Efficiency Maine funding for a big attic insulation project early this winter. They did all of the paperwork, and totally guided us through a vermiculite removal process that included a payment from a trust for the procedure. I could instantly feel the second floor being so much warmer than before. The boiler does not kick on nearly as frequently since they completed the job. It was worth every penny! This team of individuals was professional at all times. They set up barriers that kept the dust at a minimum. They conducted an air flow audit and cut the draft circulation from the outside in half by sealing cracks. They hauled out the old insulation and replaced it with blown in insulation with an R - 60 Value. They also did the rebate paperwork so that I could get my $1500.00 rebate from the state of Maine. Evergreen was professional and competent in taking on a complex project of not only encapsulation and insulation of basement and crawlspace, but completed needed improvements to the structural integrity of the wood floor platform above a crawlspace and brought in a concrete contractor to pour where there was once a rotting, tiered wood platform - replacing that area with a more functional and tight tiered concrete area.
