Rockland Public Library: The Home Stretch

It’s our last week at the Rockland Public Library. We usually spend a week, maybe two, on a job, but then again, we usually work on homes. A big municipal building is a different animal, and it’s taken us almost seven weeks to tame this one.

There are more stakeholders involved in this project than in the typical home energy efficiency upgrade – Library patrons, Rockland taxpayers, Library staff, and City Council members, to name a few. Since we aim to please, and to educate while we’re at it, we’ve been tracking the project’s progress on this blog, and Production Manager Svea Tullberg has been sending Library Director Amy Levine regular updates. Svea has also given tours to reporters, photographers, members of the Rockland City Council, and Library staff – like Reference Librarian Dan O’Connor, right – all while managing the project. (She’s pretty amazing.)

We couldn't be more pleased with the easy, professional, high-value service from Evergreen. Having purchased an older home that had been in our family for generations, we needed multiple upgrades, including insulation throughout. Evergreen insulated our attic with blown-in cellulose, built a new, super-insulated attic hatch, sealed off the old one (which was just a piece of plywood in a closet ceiling), and also talked us through our best options to upgrade our heating system given the plans we have to add onto the house.

Our basement was the eyesore of the house. I wanted to make improvements, but first needed to make structural, insulating and moisture mitigation improvements. Evergreen was professional and competent in taking on a complex project of not only encapsulation and insulation of basement and crawlspace, but completed needed improvements to the structural integrity of the wood floor platform above a crawlspace and brought in a concrete contractor to pour where there was once a rotting, tiered wood platform - replacing that area with a more functional and tight tiered concrete area.

They did all of the paperwork, and totally guided us through a vermiculite removal process that included a payment from a trust for the procedure. I could instantly feel the second floor being so much warmer than before. The boiler does not kick on nearly as frequently since they completed the job. It was worth every penny!
