Transforming a Home with Energy Efficiency and Solar Electricity

There’s no doubt that a fuel bill like this is overwhelming: 750 gallons of oil, plus 6 cords of wood, plus all the electricity it took to power an inefficient old water heater. The homeowners knew they needed to do something to control costs and make their home more affordable to live in long-term – but like many households, they didn’t know where to start.

For this Rockport family, the answer was an energy efficiency and solar electricity project marked by collaboration and a series of firsts. Maine’s leading energy companies, Revision Energy and Evergreen Home Performance will tell the story of this collaboration – and of the projects that help homeowners stretch their home energy dollars – at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast on Tuesday, October 16 at 7 pm. The talk is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.

The project featured in Tuesday’s talk was made possible by Efficiency Maine’s long-term, low-interest loan programs, PACE and PowerSaver. By combining both loans, the homeowners were able to access $40,000 to finance energy upgrades that changed how they generate energy as well as what they do with it. Evergreen took the lead on energy assessment and did air sealing & insulation in the attics and basement to keep heat inside the home’s building envelope. A new wall-mounted propane-fired condensing boiler from All-Heat will generate that heat more efficiently, and a 4.8 kilowatt grid-tied solar electric array from ReVision Energy will generate electricity top be used immediately or exported to the grid where it will earn the homeowners credits.

The crew members from Evergreen Home Performance each made sure to greet us every day, while maintaining their distance in this time of the pandemic. Their work took a total of nine days, spread over three weeks. Even though they were working in multiple rooms of our house, as well as the basement and attic, they were unobtrusive and always cleaned up after themselves every day. We initially contacted Evergreen through Efficiency Maine for an energy audit, which was conducted promptly and professionally by Justin McEdward, one of their Energy Advisors who is BPI-certified. After a thorough inspection of our newly purchased home, Justin explained in great detail what we needed and did not need. It was agreed that Evergreen would remove all of the existing attic insulation, which was not adequate, and replace it with blown in cellulose, to a rating of R-60.

In the final stages of selling our home, and with a closing date set, an inspection came across an unanticipated issue in our attic.
