Maine Among the 10 Most Energy Expensive States

Maine is among the 10 most “energy expensive” states in the country, according to finance website WalletHub.com. The site compared monthly energy expenses in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia and examined the consumption rates and prices of four energy types: electricity, natural gas, motor fuel and home heating oil.

Maine’s total monthly energy cost per household is $341, with almost 32% of that going to heating oil.Mainers spend a higher percentage of their energy dollars on heating oil than residents of any other state, despite having the ninth most affordable home heating oil prices.

Unfortunately, WalletHub reports, “lower prices don’t always equate with lower costs, as consumption is a key determinant in the total amount of an energy bill” and Maine has the nation’s highest heating oil consumption per housing unit.

“This study is actually full of good news,” says Richard Burbank, president and Energy Advisor at Evergreen Home Performance. “If our energy expenses were due to high oil prices, we couldn’t do anything about it. But homeowners have the power to reduce their consumption by improving their energy efficiency.”

Evergreen was so helpful in securing us Efficiency Maine funding for a big attic insulation project early this winter. They did all of the paperwork, and totally guided us through a vermiculite removal process that included a payment from a trust for the procedure. We absolutely loved our experience with Evergreen. The team was incredibly kind, professional and great to work with. Evergreen did everything they said they would and more. I actually don't mind going into the basement now since they sealed it. The air quality in the house is noticeably better and it's warmer in the winter. We can even store clothing down there where before, whatever was in there would mildew. Even the spider population declined! I used to vacuum so many of them from the corners of the ceilings in the house. Not any more!
